Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian checkers, the game begins with the white player moving first. Checkers are confined to dark squares, and capturing an opponent's piece is mandatory when possible. Players can capture both forward and backward, and kings have the freedom to move and capture along any diagonal. The Turkish strike rule applies, meaning an opponent's piece can only be captured once per move. If multiple captures are available, you can choose any option, not necessarily the longest. Upon reaching the opponent's edge, a checker becomes a king and can immediately move as a king if the opportunity arises.
A draw can be declared under several conditions:
- If a player has checkers and three or more kings against an opponent's single king and fails to capture the opponent's king within 15 moves from when the balance of forces is established.
- In positions where both players have kings and the balance of forces remains unchanged for 30 moves in 4 and 5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6 and 7 piece endings.
- If a player with three checkers (in any combination) against an opponent's single king on the "high road" cannot capture the king within 5 moves.
- If players only move kings without moving simple checkers or capturing for 15 moves.
- If the same position repeats three or more times, with the same player to move each time.
International Checkers 10×10
Similar to Russian checkers, International checkers starts with the white player moving first, and pieces move on dark squares with mandatory captures when possible. Both forward and backward captures are allowed, and kings can move and capture along any diagonal. The Turkish strike rule is in effect, and the majority rule mandates capturing the largest number of pieces when multiple captures are possible. A simple checker that reaches the opponent's edge during a capture continues moving as a regular checker, but if it reaches the edge by a regular move, it becomes a king and must wait until the next turn to move as a king.
