Preparation for Children Going to the Hospital
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" is a collaborative project developed by the Oncology Department R at H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, alongside hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication.
Designed specifically for children aged 4-7, "HC And" serves as a vital tool to prepare and alleviate anxiety in young children who are unfamiliar with many hospital terms. This resource introduces the youngest children, along with their families and friends, to the general cancer patient journey within a hospital setting.
The content is delivered through a child's voice and engaging animations, utilizing the "Learning through Play" approach on tablets, mobile phones, or touch screens. This method is particularly effective for children in this age group, who learn and process information best through play and concrete examples. As relatives of cancer patients, children can quickly become overwhelmed with information. To address this, "HC And" is structured into short, manageable sequences tailored to a child's perspective, making it an ideal starting point for newcomers.
The material includes seven staged stories that address common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Hospital staff can leverage these resources as an educational tool to foster a shared understanding with the child.
