Hnefatafl is a classic Scandinavian board game. Its variants, known as Tafl games, were widespread across medieval Europe long before chess existed. In these games, two uneven armies clash: the larger black invaders aim to capture the white king, while the smaller white defenders strive to protect their monarch and secure his escape.

Often known as the Game of the Vikings, Hnefatafl brings historical clashes to life, from the Muscovite invasion of Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. Whatever the setting, the core challenge remains: the hunt for the king.

Though the rules are simple, Hnefatafl offers deep strategic play. Surround enemy pieces, plan moves ahead, set traps, and force your opponent to surrender. Will you seize the king for glory? Or can the royal guard repel the invaders and ensure their king’s flight?
