Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality and Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1

by Caleb Apr 20,2025

Ed Boon, the development chief for Mortal Kombat 1, has stirred excitement among fans by revealing a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality via social media. This glimpse into the upcoming guest character's finishing move pays homage to the iconic truck chase from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 relentlessly pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor.

In a celebratory tweet, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million sales, marking an increase from the previously reported four million units. The tweet also featured a short clip of the T-1000's Fatality, driving a smashed-up truck into his opponent, which is sure to thrill fans of the Terminator franchise.

Boon's accompanying comment, "With Conan getting into player's hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", has sparked speculation within the Mortal Kombat community. While it may directly refer to the T-1000's upcoming release, many fans are hopeful that it hints at more DLC characters to come after the current lineup is complete.

The T-1000 is the final character to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, following Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amidst discussions about the game's sales performance, fans are eager to learn if NetherRealm will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains supportive of the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav highlighted plans to focus on four key titles, including Mortal Kombat. Additionally, Boon has assured fans that NetherRealm decided on its next project three years ago but will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 for the foreseeable future.

While many anticipate that NetherRealm's next project might be a third installment in the Injustice series, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice franchise, which began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 and continued with Injustice 2 in 2017, was expected to alternate with Mortal Kombat releases. However, NetherRealm opted for another Mortal Kombat game with the 2023 release of Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot.

In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to focus on Mortal Kombat 1 instead of Injustice 3, citing factors such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Mortal Kombat 11 ran on Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 utilizes Unreal Engine 4. Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to leverage the new graphics engine.

When asked about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon reassured fans that the door is not closed, indicating potential for future developments in the series.
