Beginner’s Guide for Dead Sails
Screenshot by The Escapist. If you’re new to Dead Sails, don't worry. Much like its predecessor Dead Rails, the game is quite straightforward – you're tasked with captaining a ship on a 10 thousand meters journey between towns, with the ultimate goal of reaching 100k meters sailed. The key is to keep moving, ensure you don't run out of fuel, and stay alive. Sounds simple, right?
Before You Set Sail
The in-game lobby before you start a round is incredibly useful, though it does come with a cost. As a new player, you begin with 15 Dabloons, the game's currency. It may not seem like much, but it's enough to make some initial purchases. Boats are expensive and not necessary for beginners. While items like bandages and weapons might be tempting, you'll find plenty of these while playing.
How To Choose A Class
Screenshot by The Escapist. We recommend using your initial 15 Dabloons to buy a class. Classes are in-game perks that you select through a loot box system, and each purchase costs 3 Dabloons. You might get lucky and land a class you enjoy on your first try. The game features great Common and Uncommon classes such as Pirate and Gunslinger. Your choice should align with your play style. For a detailed breakdown, check out our Dead Sails Class Tierlist.
What To Do In Towns
Screenshot by The Escapist. When you start a round, you're spawned in a town where your ship is docked. These towns appear every 10 thousand meters and serve as your safe havens. They offer various amenities to help you on your journey:
- Trading Hut: Sell items you’ve collected.
- General Store: Purchase essential items.
- Hospital: Heal yourself.
- Gun Shop: Buy guns and ammunition.
- Sheriff’s: Earn bounty money from pirate and creature corpses.
Starting with a blunt weapon like a pickaxe or hammer, there's no immediate need to buy a firearm. Instead, focus on buying coal – spend all your money on as much coal as you can. Fuel is crucial in Dead Sails, as the game ends if you can't move your ship.
Dead Sails Tips & Tricks
The gameplay might seem straightforward, but you'll encounter various buildings and structures and face attacks from undead creatures. Here are the key tips to master the game:
Tips For Never Running Out Of Fuel
Screenshot by The Escapist. In Dead Sails, your ship runs on coal. Each chunk of coal adds 20 percent more fuel to your tank, and theoretically, you could finish the game by buying 5 coal pieces in every town. But where's the fun in that?
You'll find collectible items with a fuel marker that add 5 percent fuel. However, the most efficient way to fuel up, aside from coal, is by using undead corpses. Kill everything that attacks you and use their bodies, which you can store in your inventory, to fuel your ship.
How To Survive The Night
Screenshot by The Escapist. Similar to Dead Rails, Dead Sails becomes significantly harder at night. With reduced visibility, you must be cautious. Remember, dying means game over.
Ideally, spend the night in town for safety. If that's not possible, purchase Barbed Wire from a shop beforehand. Mounting this on your ship will keep mobs at bay. Without Barbed Wire, pause your journey and attack any approaching creatures.
Which Weapon To Choose
Screenshot by The Escapist. Weapon choice depends on your preference. If you prefer melee combat, the starting hammer or pickaxe might suffice. However, as you progress, you'll face stronger enemies that require more powerful weapons.
A shotgun is a strong choice due to its high damage output, perfect for unexpected encounters. For early-game players, the revolver is a good option – it's weaker but easier to handle and often found in buildings.
Best Items To Collect
Screenshot by The Escapist. While you can sell every item you collect, including junk for 3 or 5 cash per item, your inventory is limited to 10 items. Prioritize collecting:
- Moyai and Bars: Available in diamond, gold, and silver; great for earning money.
- Healing Packs: Keep these for emergencies rather than selling them.
- Crosses: Sell for 35 cash or use them against the undead.
- Weapons: Use or sell as needed.
- Robot Head: Found in houses and banks; sells for 45 cash.
- Holy Water: Typically found in churches; sells for 25 cash.
- Gold Llama: A rare, valuable item that sells for 150 cash.
You can stack items on your boat, but remember to weld them in place using the weld button (Z on the keyboard) to prevent them from falling off.
And that's the beginner's guide to Dead Sails! Follow these tips and you'll become the best captain to ever sail the seas – or, in this case, the small, canal-like river. For an extra boost in your gameplay, check out our Dead Sails codes.
