GTA 4 Remaster Urged by Ex-Rockstar Dev: 'Niko Remains Top GTA Protagonist'

by Emery Jul 16,2025

A former Rockstar Games veteran has recently commented on growing speculation that *Grand Theft Auto IV* could be getting a next-gen re-release, suggesting the title “should be remastered.” The rumor initially gained traction after a post from Tez2, a well-known figure in the GTA community who frequently shares insider-type updates about Rockstar’s titles. According to Tez2, a potential *GTA 4* port for modern consoles might arrive this year—possibly linked to Rockstar taking down a recent *GTA 5 Liberty City Mod*.

However, it's important to note that Rockstar Games has made no official statements or announcements indicating plans to re-release *GTA 4*. Given the studio's intense focus on the development of *GTA VI*, any return to Liberty City would come as a major surprise.

Obbe Vermeij Weighs In

Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar Games and a key developer behind several of the company's iconic titles during his tenure from 1995 to 2009, was asked about the rumors on social media. While he admitted he hadn’t heard anything concrete about a new release, he did express support for a *GTA 4* remaster.

It's a great game and there have been a number of successful remasters recently,” Vermeij stated, likely referencing projects like *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered*.

He went on to say, “I would like to see it updated,” adding further, “Niko is still the best protagonist in any GTA game I think.” Niko Bellic, the central character in *GTA IV*, remains a fan favorite for many due to his complex personality and emotionally driven storyline.

What Could a GTA 4 Remaster Look Like?

Vermeij also speculated on how such a remaster might technically unfold. He suggested that Rockstar could utilize its latest version of the RAGE engine—the same engine that powers its more recent open-world titles—to bring *GTA IV* up to modern standards with improved textures, lighting, physics, and performance enhancements.

Still, with *GTA VI* currently set for a fall 2025 launch window, the timing of a *GTA IV* remaster seems logistically questionable. Launching both games within the same timeframe would risk diluting attention away from Rockstar’s most anticipated title in over a decade. That said, if Rockstar were to outsource development—as it did with the *Red Dead Redemption* ports—it could be possible, though unlikely given current priorities.

Liberty City in GTA 6?

For fans of Liberty City, the iconic New York-inspired setting of *GTA IV* and *Chinatown Wars*, there's still hope it may return in some form. Rumors persist that Liberty City could appear in *GTA VI* either at launch or as post-launch DLC.

Set in the fictional Leonida (loosely based on Florida), *GTA VI* will include Vice City, Rockstar’s take on Miami. However, including Liberty City as part of an expansion pack wouldn't be out of the question, especially considering its historical significance in the franchise.

Until Rockstar officially confirms anything, all of this remains speculative. For now, fans can look forward to *GTA VI* while keeping their fingers crossed for a fresh coat of paint on one of the series’ most beloved entries.
