Jar of Sparks, the NetEase-backed studio founded by former Halo Infinite design head Jerry Hook, has paused development on its debut game project. The studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its vision for a "next-generation narrative-driven action game."
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development halt and the search for a new partner capable of supporting the studio's creative ambitions. While he expressed pride in the team's progress and innovative approach, he also indicated that team members would be "exploring new opportunities," suggesting potential layoffs. A subsequent post clarified the studio's commitment to assisting its employees in finding new roles as the first project concludes.
This isn't the first instance of a prominent game developer establishing a NetEase-affiliated studio. In 2022, former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi launched GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase.
NetEase itself continues to support its live-service titles, including Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals, which is currently enjoying success with its Season 1 Battle Pass and preparing for the addition of the Fantastic Four.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, which has faced challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise. While Jar of Sparks' project is temporarily on hold, the future remains uncertain for both the studio and its ambitious project.
