Hollow Knight: Silksong Playable at Australian Museum in September 2025

by Christopher May 12,2025

IGN is thrilled to announce that fans of the highly anticipated game Hollow Knight: Silksong will have the opportunity to play it at Australia's national museum of screen culture, ACMI, in Melbourne starting September 18, 2025. Developed by Team Cherry, a studio based in Adelaide, South Australia, Silksong has been eagerly awaited by gamers worldwide and has consistently topped the Steam wishlist chart. While the exact release date remains under wraps beyond a 2025 window, this event marks a significant milestone for the game.

Silksong will be featured in ACMI's Game Worlds exhibition, which will also showcase the intricate design and artistic direction behind the game. This exhibition promises to give visitors an in-depth look at the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet's movements and attacks, as well as the logic behind the game's challenging boss fights.

Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell, co-curators at ACMI, expressed their excitement about the exhibition: "Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!"

As part of the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, which is one of several design elements that will be showcased in the Game Worlds exhibition. The image was provided to IGN with permission.

The upcoming playable event at ACMI has sparked speculation about the game's release date. Given that Silksong will be playable starting September 18, it's likely that the game will be released before this date, possibly as early as August 2025. The excitement around Silksong has been building, with the game making a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct last month, confirming Team Cherry’s updated launch plans for 2025. This brief showcase was the most significant update on Silksong in years.

Silksong was originally announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, with subsequent announcements confirming versions for Xbox (including Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Over the years, Team Cherry has engaged fans with intriguing teases, including a mysterious chocolate cake recipe at the start of 2025, which led to speculation about an April re-reveal. As the release window narrows, anticipation continues to mount for what promises to be a landmark release in the indie gaming world.
