James Gunn Unveils First Look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

by Nicholas Apr 11,2025

The cameras have officially started rolling on DC's highly anticipated film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. To mark this exciting milestone, DC boss James Gunn took to Bluesky to share a glimpse of Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, as she steps into the iconic role of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. While the photo Gunn shared is more of a teaser—showing Alcock seated in her actor's chair—it's still a thrilling first look at the character.

In his post, Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El." This confirms that Craig Gillespie, the acclaimed director behind Cruella and I, Tonya, will be directing the film, aligning with reports from last April.

While specific details about the plot remain under wraps, it's known that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow draws significant inspiration from the graphic novel of the same name by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. This standalone story follows an alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. The comic, which was nominated for "Best Limited Series" at the 2022 Eisner Award, is a compelling read for anyone looking to dive deeper into the narrative.

The cast for the film is shaping up to be impressive, with Matthias Schoenaerts taking on the role of Krem, Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother, and Jason Momoa stepping into the role of Lobo in the new DC universe.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the second film in the revamped DC universe, following the release of James Gunn's Superman this summer. Other projects in development include The Batman Part II, which may or may not connect to Gunn's broader cinematic universe, and a rumored Clayface film from director Mike Flanagan.
