One of the most iconic parts of any *Dynasty Warriors* game is the legendary Battle of Hulao Gate, and you better believe it’s in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. It’s also a major test that could take you several attempts. Here’s how to complete it.

The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the climactic end of Chapter 2 in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, where your mission is to defeat Dong Zhuo. Reaching him requires significant effort and might take longer than any previous mission.
When the mission starts, navigate around the four enemy bases located in the bottom right of the map. After conquering two bases, a cutscene will trigger, showing a mounted cavalry charging down a hill toward your position. Stay focused and continue your base conquests. You'll encounter and naturally defeat the cavalry, including their commander, Zhang Liao. Defeating him rewards you with the twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.
Once you secure all the bases, you're ready to assault the gate, leading to your first significant confrontation with Dong Zhuo’s forces. This battle can be chaotic, but your primary goal is to protect Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic. His tactic will weaken the defenses, allowing you to advance toward Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
At this stage, Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu to the frontline. A critical rule: do not engage Lu Bu in direct combat. A one-on-one fight with him is suicidal; he will crush you. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers on the periphery to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu’s presence severely depletes.
Eventually, Lu Bu will move to attack your main base, targeting Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to chase him. Remember the cardinal rule of *Dynasty Warriors*: do not pursue Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to hold him off, giving you the time needed to defeat Dong Zhuo. This sets a timer for the mission. Liu Bei's forces can't delay Lu Bu indefinitely. When the game indicates their retreat, ensure you're close to defeating Dong Zhuo, or Lu Bu will destroy Yuan Shao and end the mission prematurely.
Go After Dong Zhuo
With Lu Bu distracted, quickly restock on meat buns at your conquered bases if needed, then head back to the gate. While Cao Cao readies his charge, you should capture the bases to the north and west. Once you have all three squads prepared to attack Dong Zhuo and are fully healed, enter the closest commander’s circle and charge into battle.
You'll face a massive army and Dong Zhuo’s initial Grand Tactic of launching fireballs. To counter this, destroy the front two catapults. If possible, activate Musou Rage and rush through the wall of soldiers guarding the catapults. Clear the path by defeating the surrounding soldiers and officers, allowing your forces to demolish the catapults and end his tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will deploy another Grand Tactic involving fireballs. This time, you need to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Head up the stairs on the right to confront the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has defected to Dong Zhuo’s side. If you can, challenge her to a duel. Winning against her simplifies the fight against the officer.
With the second Grand Tactic thwarted, a clear path to Dong Zhuo opens up. Your forces should have enough morale to overwhelm his remaining troops, and Lu Bu should still be engaged with Liu Bei’s forces. Additionally, Dian Wei might initiate a Grand Tactic, further easing your path to victory. While dueling Dong Zhuo might be tempting, a straightforward attack is advisable as his forces will be significantly weakened by this point.
