Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making waves with its upcoming VR release, exclusively launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Civilization 7 VR Meta Quest 3 Exclusive

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed the VR edition during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, stating, “We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!” Chris Pruett, Meta Director of Games, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the momentum in mixed reality and emphasizing Civ VII VR as a "genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." Noteworthy is the absence of a PSVR2 release, despite Civ VII's presence on PlayStation consoles.

Civilization 7 VR Immersive Gameplay

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR immerses players in a Command Table environment, allowing for strategic maneuvering and detailed observation of units and buildings, reminiscent of a physical board game. Players can seamlessly switch between virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) modes. 2K Games describes the experience: "In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space."

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team has committed to UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Further updates will include community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, expanded map variety, and more. A quality-of-life update in March is planned, addressing UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.

Release Information

Civilization VII VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced. The standard Civ VII is available in early access and launches worldwide on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
