NieR: Automata: Unlocking the Type-40 Sword

In NieR:Automata, small swords boast fast attack speeds and narrow hitboxes, making them versatile weapons. While weapon upgrades enhance their effectiveness, powerful late-game weapons like the Type-40 sword significantly boost character strength. This guide details how to obtain this often-missed weapon.

Acquiring the Type-40 Sword

The Type-40 sword is the reward for completing the side quest "Find a Present," the culmination of a questline involving Operator 6O. To unlock it, you must first complete two preceding quests. Here's a step-by-step guide, including chapter selection points if needed:

  1. Post-Chapter 5: After defeating Adam and Eve in Chapter 5, you'll receive a call from Operator 6O. This initiates the "Investigating Communications" quest – complete it immediately as it's easily missed.
  2. Chapter 6 & 7 Progression: Proceed through Chapter 6 (Forest Castle events) and into Chapter 7.
  3. "Terminal Repairs": After speaking with Pascal about A2 and exploring the city ruins, Operator 6O will contact you again, directing you to an access point to start the "Terminal Repairs" quest.
  4. "Find a Present": While returning to the Resistance Camp during Chapter 7, a final call from Operator 6O will mention flowers and send a message initiating "Find a Present."
  5. Reward: Complete "Find a Present" to receive the Type-40 sword via an in-game message.

Type-40 Sword Stats & Upgrades

At level 1, the Type-40 sword performs a 5-hit light attack combo and a 3-hit heavy attack combo. Upgrading it to level 4 increases the light attack combo to 7 hits and enhances its effectiveness against stunned enemies. Titanium Alloy is required for these upgrades.

Additional "Find a Present" Rewards

Completing "Find a Present" also yields:

  • A130: Bomb
  • Amber x 4
  • 5,000 G
  • 800 EXP
