DC Studios boss James Gunn has officially announced that Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on Max on August 21. Accompanying this exciting news, Gunn shared a brief snippet of new footage, heightening the anticipation for fans. In the teaser, John Cena, reprising his role as Peacemaker, is seen in action, flashing a smirk towards the camera amidst a backdrop of flames. A voice declares, "Peacemaker is a superhero now," setting the stage for the upcoming season.
Gunn's enthusiasm for the new season is palpable, as he tweeted, "Counting the days until Peace on Earth. I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it’s one of my favorite things ever. DC Studios’ #Peacemaker Season 2 coming soon only on @StreamOnMax August 21."
The release of Peacemaker Season 2 follows closely on the heels of the Superman movie, set to premiere on July 11, marking the official start of Gunn's rebooted DC Universe (DCU). This season will be the third installment in the new DCU, following the Creature Commandos TV series from last year and the upcoming Superman film.
Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are steering the DCU away from the less favorably received DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which included films like Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. However, certain elements from the DCEU will carry over into the new universe. Peacemaker is a prime example of this continuity, having debuted in the DCEU with its first season and now continuing into the new DCU with its second.
Gunn has reassured fans that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," although specifics on what will transition from the DCEU to the DCU are still under wraps. The entire Team Peacemaker will return with the same cast, including John Cena as Peacemaker, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Moreover, Gunn has confirmed that the storyline of Peacemaker Season 2 will be set after the events of both Creature Commandos and Superman, with the latter's events directly impacting Peacemaker's narrative. This integration promises a rich, interconnected DCU experience for viewers.
