Debunking the Soulslike Label: Four Difficulty Options and More

Phantom Blade Zero Playtime Estimated to be 20-30 Hours with Adjustable Difficulty

Recent reports confirm Phantom Blade Zero will offer four difficulty settings: Easy, Ordinary, Difficult, and Extremely Difficult. While its aesthetic and combat initially drew Soulslike comparisons following its PlayStation Showcase 2023 reveal, the inclusion of varied difficulty levels sets it apart. Soulslike games are renowned for their unforgiving challenge, typically lacking alternative difficulty options.

Phantom Blade Zero's Game Director, Soulframe, clarified this misconception in a tweet following the game's Summer Game Fest 2024 appearance. He emphasized that creating another Soulslike was never the intention. Instead, the focus is on "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

The game's dark world and unique boss encounters did inspire Soulslike comparisons. Soulframe acknowledged inspiration from Soulslike games in the design of multi-layered maps, diverse approach paths, and hidden areas, but clarified that "the similarities stop there." He previously described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," a blend of intense hack-and-slash gameplay and expansive exploration.

Gameplay Deep Dive: Weapons, Playtime, and More

Further details from recent interviews paint a clearer picture of Phantom Blade Zero's gameplay. Players can choose from over 30 primary weapons and 20 secondary weapons, each with unique combat properties. The main story is estimated to take 20-30 hours, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content.

Boss fights feature at least two phases, offering a convenient restart option from the second phase if the player falls in battle. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," allows players to rematch defeated bosses, potentially unlocking hidden encounters.

A mechanic influencing the game's ending has been mentioned, though the specifics and number of alternate endings remain undisclosed.

Phantom Blade Zero "Year of the Snake" Gameplay Trailer

The "Year of the Snake" gameplay trailer showcases Soul, the protagonist, battling "Chief Disciple of The Seven Stars." The trailer also highlights several weapons, including "Weapon No.13 Soft Snake Sword" and "Weapon No.27 White Serpent and Crimson Viper."

The trailer suggests a 2025 release date announcement. Phantom Blade Zero's official Twitter (X) page also shared a Lunar New Year video where Soulframe hinted at more exciting announcements and reveals later in the year.

Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for PlayStation 5, with a PC release also planned. An official release date is yet to be announced.
