Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Joins Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Available on August 9

Nintendo is enriching the Switch's Expansion Pack with another cherished Pokémon title. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service starting August 9. This announcement from Nintendo highlights the inclusion of this classic Pokémon spin-off in the Expansion Pack plan, which offers access to a curated selection of Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis games.

Originally launched globally for the Game Boy Advance in 2006, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is a roguelike spin-off where players embody a human transformed into a Pokémon. The gameplay involves navigating dungeons and undertaking missions to uncover the mystery behind the transformation. Alongside its release, a version called Blue Rescue Team was released for the Nintendo DS. The game was later remade for the Switch in 2020 under the title Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

Pokémon Fans Advocate for Mainline Games on NSO Expansion Pack

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack regularly expands its catalog with classic titles, yet it has only featured Pokémon spin-offs like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League, leaving some fans unsatisfied. There is a strong desire among Pokémon enthusiasts for mainline games, such as Pokémon Red and Blue, to be part of the expansion pack. Although Nintendo has not yet included these titles, fans have proposed various reasons for the delay.

Pokémon Adds Another Game to the NSO Library

Speculation ranges from issues with N64 Transfer Pak compatibility to challenges with the NSO infrastructure and integration with the Pokémon Home app on the Switch. Since Nintendo does not fully own the Pokémon Home app, contractual complexities between the partnering companies might hinder its smooth integration. "I'd guess they want to ensure trading is secure and can't be exploited," a fan theorized.
