Pokémon TCG Pocket to Skip Competitive Play

Pokémon TCG Pocket Will Remain a Casual Experience

The Pokémon Company has confirmed Pokémon TCG Pocket won't be joining the competitive circuit anytime soon. Here's why this digital card game remains focused on casual play rather than tournament formats.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Stays Out of Competitive Play

No Current Competitive Plans

Casual Focus for Pokémon TCG PocketPokémon TCG Pocket currently has no roadmap for competitive integration according to The Pokémon Company's Director of eSports Chris Brown. In a February 25, 2025 interview with VGC, Brown explained they regularly evaluate titles for competitive potential, but Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't under consideration.

Referencing the company's humorous Pokémon Sleep April Fool's joke, Brown quipped "Pokemon Sleep is out there too," before clarifying "at this time there are no plans for Pokemon Pocket to join, but we're always assessing opportunities."

Game Balance and Accessibility Factors

Simplified Mechanics Limit Competitive PotentialWhile official reasons haven't been disclosed, players speculate the decision stems from the game's recent launch (October 2024) and current balance challenges. Though competitive features exist in-app, Pokémon TCG Pocket was designed as a streamlined experience - a more accessible alternative to the physical TCG with different design priorities.

The Pokémon competitive calendar remains packed with Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, and Pokémon Unite all featuring in August 2025's Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California.

Potential New Set Announcement Coming

The upcoming Pokémon Presents broadcast might unveil a new Pokémon TCG Pocket set, following January's Space Time Smackdown release. While unconfirmed, expectations run high for franchise announcements.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A could also feature after its 2025 release window was confirmed last year, possibly showcasing new Mega Evolutions. The presentation should offer insights into Pokémon's broader plans.
