Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but the gaming fun continues! This week brings a bounty of game reviews, fresh releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection joins the ranks. This compilation features Miles Edgeworth's two adventures, finally bringing the unlocalized title to English-speaking audiences. The sequel cleverly builds upon the original's plot, enhancing the overall experience.
These games offer a unique perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar—searching for clues, questioning witnesses—the distinct presentation and Edgeworth's character add a fresh feel. The pacing can be uneven, but fans of the main Ace Attorney series will find much to enjoy. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere—the second is significantly better.
The collection includes bonus features like a gallery, a story mode, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialog history is also included. Overall, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling experience, and the inclusion of the second game is a major win for fans. Now, almost every Ace Attorney title is available on Switch!
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to the obscure NES title Gimmick!? It's surprising, but Gimmick! 2 delivers. Developed by Bitwave Games, it stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those who prefer a less demanding experience.
Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as a weapon, vehicle, and puzzle solver. New collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling tougher sections. The game is demanding, but generous checkpoints prevent frustration from overwhelming the fun. The charming visuals and music add to the experience.
While not excessively long, Gimmick! 2 maintains the original's difficulty. Expect frequent deaths, but the clever use of Yumetaro's star and enemies is key to success. This sequel successfully builds upon the original while forging its own identity. Fans of the first game, and challenging platformers in general, will find this a worthy addition to their library.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience. While the Switch's hardware might slightly limit the visual fidelity, the intense action, soundtrack, and creepy visuals still shine through.
The game's weapon system adds strategic depth. You juggle your main gun, a melee weapon to recharge energy, and a rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and dodging is crucial.
While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains the original's distinctive atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids many genre pitfalls. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version still delivers a fun and engaging experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games often cater primarily to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. Fans will appreciate the solid writing, fitting the source material's tone, and the meta-systems that reward dedicated players.
However, non-fans may find the game lacking. The limited number of repetitive mini-games might not offer much appeal without prior knowledge of the franchise. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service may overshadow the overall gameplay.
While the presentation is strong, the limited gameplay and short lifespan hinder the game's overall enjoyment. Dedicated fans might find enough content in the unlockables to justify the purchase, but others may find it underwhelming.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three are fully localized for the first time in English. The collection includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.
The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game. The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent. While not top-tier NES games, they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's Japanese library.
Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The localization effort is commendable, and the reasonable price makes it an attractive option for those seeking less-known classics.
