Scarlett Johansson Confirms Black Widow's Demise: 'She's Gone'

by Gabriel May 15,2025

Scarlett Johansson, a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly declared that her iconic character, Black Widow, is "dead" and shows no interest in reprising the role in the near future. During a candid conversation with InStyle, Johansson addressed the persistent fan speculation about Natasha Romanoff's potential return while she gears up for her next big-screen venture, this summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?" Johansson stated emphatically, addressing fans' hopes for her character's comeback. She emphasized the importance of allowing Natasha her heroic sacrifice, saying, "We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

Johansson's last portrayal of Black Widow was in the 2021 standalone film, but the character's death occurred in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, where she sacrificed herself to save Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye. Despite this clear narrative closure, fans continue to speculate on potential resurrections, a common thread in the MCU's history of reviving beloved characters.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson remarked about the fans' reluctance to accept Black Widow's fate. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

The MCU's penchant for bringing back deceased characters has fueled excitement for upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These movies are not only pivotal for the franchise's next chapter but are also rumored to feature numerous cameos. While Robert Downey Jr. is set to transition from Iron Man to play Doctor Doom, rumors swirl around other potential returns, including Chris Evans as Captain America, despite his denial. Additionally, Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice in the MCU, is rumored to appear in Doomsday.

With the anticipation building for Avengers: Doomsday on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, fans are eager to see which characters, dead or alive, will make an appearance.
