Simple arithmetic in Minecraft: dividing the screen into parts

by Stella Jan 05,2025

Relive the classic couch co-op experience with Minecraft! This guide shows you how to play split-screen Minecraft on your Xbox One or other compatible consoles. Gather your friends, grab some snacks, and let's get started!

Important Considerations:

Split-screen functionality is exclusive to consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch). PC players are unfortunately out of luck. You'll also need an HD (720p) compatible TV or monitor and a console that supports this resolution. HDMI connection automatically adjusts resolution; VGA may require manual adjustment in your console's settings.

Local Split-Screen Gameplay:

Minecraft supports both local and online split-screen. Local split-screen allows up to four players on a single console. Here's how:

  1. Connect your console: Use an HDMI cable for optimal results.
  2. Launch Minecraft: Create a new world or load an existing one. Crucially, disable the multiplayer option in the settings.
  3. Configure your world: Choose difficulty, settings, and world parameters.
  4. Start the game: Once loaded, activate additional player slots. This is usually done by pressing the "Options" button twice (PS) or the "Start" button (Xbox).
  5. Log in and play: Each player logs into their account to join the game. The screen will automatically split into sections (2-4 players).

Online Multiplayer with Local Split-Screen:

While you can't directly split-screen with online players, you can combine local split-screen with online multiplayer. Follow the steps for local split-screen, but enable the multiplayer option before starting the game. Then, send invitations to your remote friends to join your session.

Enjoy the fun! Minecraft's split-screen mode makes for a fantastic shared gaming experience.
