Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with a monumental update, version 2.0, set to launch on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to capture the massive following that its developers at Supercell hoped for. With this update, they're looking to turn things around and breathe new life into the game.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 isn't just a minor update; it's a complete reboot. The core mechanics of how battles are fought and victories are achieved are being overhauled.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Heroes. Players will now choose a Hero to lead their squad into battle. These Heroes are based on existing characters, and if your Hero is defeated, the match is over for you.
Combat mechanics are also being transformed. Previously, players had to stop moving to engage in combat, but now, movement and attacks are seamlessly integrated. This change promises more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense battles.
The criteria for victory are shifting as well. Instead of needing to eliminate all opponents, players will only need to take down the enemy Hero. While this change has sparked some debate among the community, as it seems to lean towards a Brawl Stars-like experience, it's designed to streamline gameplay and increase excitement.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
With the update, several game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, some skins and the original progression systems will be phased out. Supercell plans to compensate players with Hero Points and other in-game items to ease the transition.

The rapid introduction of these changes underscores Supercell's urgency to boost Squad Busters' popularity, which hasn't yet reached the heights of their other hits like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars.
With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is pulling out all the stops to reignite player interest. They're launching a series of daily piñata events, which will offer opportunities to unlock a new Hero, Mortis, among other rewards.
