Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga's inaugural venture into the Star Wars franchise, is set to close its doors just over a year after its launch on iOS and Android devices. The game, which debuted in June 2024, quickly captured attention with its unique blend of game show aesthetics and innovative takes on classic Star Wars archetypes.
It has now been officially announced that Star Wars: Hunters will cease operations on October 1st, 2024. A final content update is scheduled to be released on April 15th, 2024. In light of this news, Zynga has confirmed that players can now request refunds for any in-game currency they've purchased. Additionally, to give players more time to enjoy the game, season three will be extended, and certain seasonal events will be rerun.
Fans eagerly awaiting the addition of the final hunter, Tuya, will be pleased to know that she will be introduced in the last content update and will be available to all players for free from the outset.
The End of the Journey
The decision to shutter Star Wars: Hunters came as a surprise to many, as there were few signs that the game was underperforming. Given Zynga's robust standing in the industry, the closure suggests underlying factors beyond mere performance metrics. One possible reason could be the oversaturation of the pseudo-hero shooter genre, coupled with a shifting demographic of Star Wars fans who may not be the target audience for a high-energy multiplayer mobile game.
