Leviathans in Subnautica 2 are truly terrifying creatures. Despite their gargantuan size, they excel at hiding before startling you the moment they appear out of nowhere. Fortunately, there is nothing magical about them unless you happen to fear magicians.
While most players actively avoid Leviathans, I decided to hunt them down so I could tell you exactly where to find them. Or rather, it was a task I had to force myself to complete for the greater good. If you want to know which spots to steer clear of—or if you enjoy being scared and want to seek them out—here is every location where you will encounter Leviathans in Subnautica 2. If I wasn't afraid of deep water before, I am now.
Collector Leviathan
The Collector Leviathan inhabits the deep abyss between the starting area and the Alien Ruins, approximately 800 to 1000 meters east of your Lifepod. This massive octopus-squid hybrid is an aggressive predator. It features a clever AI that learns your movement patterns and adapts to increase its chances of catching you.
It will make you shudder and squeal as you desperately cling to the water's surface or seafloor, hoping it won't see you if you don't look back. Unfortunately, it announces its presence with eerie sounds and blasts from its Sonic Echo ability.
If you are brave enough, you can use a Bioscanner to record the Sonic Echo as a biomod. I highly recommend staying inside your Tadpole when encountering the Collector. If you are just swimming normally, it will eat you without hesitation.
Shiver Leviathan
If the Collector didn't scare you enough, why not head toward the World Tree visible from your Lifepod? After swimming approximately 500 meters northeast, you will reach a red wall signaling that you are leaving the Early Access zone. Once you cross into the Void, another Leviathan—or several—is waiting for you…
The Shiver Leviathan acts as the guardian of the outer seas. You aren't meant to reach the World Tree, and Unknown Worlds ensures this by sending these creatures after you. In groups consisting of both large and small Shiver Leviathans (all equally terrifying), they will hunt you down quickly. Being winged also means popping your Air Bladder won't save you from them.
Great Jaw Leviathan
The Great Jaw gets its name because it resembles an enormous jawbone. In reality, it is a colossal clam located about 310 meters south of your Lifepod at roughly 40 meters deep. If you are wondering where to find Lithium in Subnautica 2, the interior of the Great Jaw serves as a treasure trove.
Entering the Great Jaw to retrieve Lithium and other valuable resources is quite different from simply finding it. The inner sanctum is protected by gooey purple strings that break easily. If you snap even one string, the Great Jaw will open its countless eyes, spot you, and clamp shut to crush you. Well, almost—unless your health bar is full. If you are skilled at hiding, you might be able to wait out the eyeballs until they close again. I haven't been brave enough to try it myself.
Deepwing Brooder Leviathan
The Deepwing Brooder Leviathans are definitely the hardest to find, but thank goodness they are also the friendliest. They won't kill you, though spotting them is tricky as they appear in groups of three within open water areas. I scouted the cliff edges near the Old Habitat, roughly 350 to 400 meters north of your Lifepod and beyond, without any luck.
However, I did manage to find them in that lovely abyss located between the starting area and the Alien Ruins. You know, the same one home to the Collector… Fortunately, I was able to pause and admire them for a moment before speeding away. If you have your Scanner equipped, you can even risk a quick scan—if you dare. They also patrol routes around the Alien Ruins, but you may need some patience if they aren't immediately visible.
Now that the stress has passed, it is time to spend some effort collecting resources, right? Here are guides on where to find Silver, Gold, and Lead. Happy hunting!
