FromSoftware has recently unveiled more details about its upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has not only influenced the game's style but also transformed the design of the hub area's keeper into a more whimsical character.
During the Switch 2 Direct, a trailer concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans. This intriguing character is none other than the new hub companion for The Duskbloods.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki elaborated on this character in an interview with Nintendo, stating, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further explained the influence of Nintendo, saying, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki added with a laugh, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers, such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll, have been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds. In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the role of the winged rat companion remains to be fully revealed. Miyazaki hinted at the team's experimentation with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," promising an unexpected experience when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
