World of Warcraft's Feast of Winter Veil: A Lore-Filled Holiday Celebration
The annual World of Warcraft Feast of Winter Veil event, mirroring real-world Christmas celebrations, returns with fresh rewards and festive items. A newly released lore video, a collaboration with PlatinumWoW, delves into the holiday's rich history within Azeroth.
This in-game event, akin to Christmas, features unique rewards and activities each year, often including new collectibles obtained through various means. The recently unveiled video explores the holiday's origins, weaving together the Dwarven myth of Greatfather Winter—a Titan-forged giant leaving snowy trails—and the Tauren's traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude to the Earthmother. The video also highlights the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin enterprise that has commercialized Winter Veil, echoing real-world Christmas traditions.
A Look Back at Winter Veil's History
No exploration of Winter Veil lore is complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after Warcraft creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has endured three kidnappings: by pirates and Dark Iron Dwarves in Classic WoW, and later by the Grinch in the current iteration. The video humorously concludes with Metzen the Reindeer expressing gratitude in Thrall's voice—a fitting tribute, given Chris Metzen's voice acting for the Orc Shaman.
This partnership with PlatinumWoW marks another successful collaboration between World of Warcraft and the popular content creator. Previous collaborations have featured lore explorations of Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge (for Wrath of the Lich King Classic), World Trees and Blackrock Depths (in modern WoW), and helpful guides for events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. This demonstrates Blizzard's ongoing commitment to working with talented content creators, alongside other initiatives like Taliesin & Evitel's guides for returning Dragonflight players and Hurricane's cinematic World of Warcraft Classic trailers.
Players can still participate in the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5th, 2024. This year's highlights include a tamable Dreaming Festive Reindeer for Hunters and new holiday transmogs and the Grunch pet for all players. After the real-world holidays conclude, players are encouraged to check under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for a special Winter Veil gift—similar to last year's Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt toy.
