These numbers serve as a form of discrete tomography, indicating the count of unbroken lines of filled squares in any given row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" signifies sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, separated by at least one blank cell.

Solving a nonogram involves deciding which cells to fill (boxes) and which to leave empty (spaces). Marking spaces correctly is just as crucial as filling boxes, as it helps in understanding where a clue's block of boxes might extend. Solvers typically use dots or crosses to mark cells they are certain are spaces.
