Chess is one of the oldest and most popular board games, enjoyed by millions worldwide. Chess originated in India around the 6th century AD and later spread throughout Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.
Chess is played on an 8×8 square board with rows numbered 1 to 8 and columns labeled a through h. The 64 squares alternate between light and dark shades, and each player starts with a light square on their bottom-right corner.
Each player begins with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. The player with the white pieces moves first, and players then take turns moving one piece at a time.
There are over 2000 chess variants, including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
