Despite being more affordable than Nintendo’s $49.99 official camera, Hori's Piranha Plant webcam has raised eyebrows due to its dated 480p resolution. However, it does offer some unique design advantages. The webcam module can detach from the base and be placed directly on top of the Nintendo Switch 2 console, providing portability that Nintendo’s own stationary camera lacks. Additionally, users can close the Piranha Plant’s mouth to cover the lens, offering a fun and intuitive privacy feature.
The revelation of the 480p resolution sparked surprise and amusement across online communities. Reddit user Ramen536Pie questioned how such outdated tech could exist in 2025: "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera."
