For Kids aged 5-7. Drag colorful blocks to create programs and make characters move!
ScratchJr is a delightful introduction to programming for young children aged 5 and up, allowing them to craft their own interactive stories and games. By snapping together vibrant graphical programming blocks, kids can make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. They can customize characters using the paint editor, add personal voices and sounds, and even include their own photos, bringing their creations to life through programming.
Inspired by the renowned Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), which is used by millions of young people aged 8 and up worldwide, ScratchJr has been thoughtfully redesigned. The interface and programming language have been tailored to be developmentally appropriate for younger children, aligning with their cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth stages.
We view coding, or computer programming, as a new form of literacy. Much like writing, coding helps organize thoughts and express ideas. Previously considered too complex for most, we believe coding should be accessible to everyone, just as writing is.
As children engage with ScratchJr, they learn to create and express themselves through the computer, rather than merely interacting with it. This process helps them develop problem-solving and project design skills, as well as sequencing abilities that are crucial for future academic achievements. They also apply math and language skills in a fun and engaging context, fostering early-childhood numeracy and literacy. With ScratchJr, kids are not just learning to code; they are coding to learn.
ScratchJr is a collaborative effort between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. Two Sigma spearheaded the Android version's development, while HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson crafted the graphics and illustrations.
