WoW Patch 11.1: Two New Race Types Added

Summary

  • World of Warcraft's Patch 11.1 introduces Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races using Goblin jetpacks.
  • The new Undermine zone in Patch 11.1 will not permit flying; instead, it will feature customizable cars and jetpacks.
  • Skyrocket races will challenge players with ring collection, speed, and increased difficulty.

World of Warcraft is set to thrill its community with the introduction of two innovative racing experiences in Patch 11.1: the Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and the exhilarating Skyrocket races that utilize flying Goblin jetpacks. These new races will take the place of traditional Skyriding races within the Undermine zone, which is set to debut in the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.

Patch 11.1, dubbed "Undermined," transports players to the bustling underground city of Undermine, the Goblins' capital. Despite its vast expanse, flying is prohibited in this zone. Instead, players will navigate using D.R.I.V.E.—a dynamic, customizable car that promises to zip through the city's streets even faster than Skyriding. With the introduction of Breakneck races, players can fully exploit the capabilities of the D.R.I.V.E. system.

Additionally, Patch 11.1 introduces Skyrocket races, a novel racing challenge that swaps traditional flying and Skyriding mounts for Goblin jetpacks. These races feature a unique movement style that combines elements of both existing flying systems. Unlike Steady flight, players cannot stop mid-air, and unlike Skyriding, they maintain momentum and altitude. According to footage from WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, racers can increase their speed by collecting rings, though this makes turning less responsive, adding to the race's difficulty.

New Skyrocket Races in World of Warcraft Patch 11.1

Given the absence of Skyriding in Undermine, Skyriding races are also not available in this zone. However, both Breakneck and Skyrocket races will offer achievements for achieving Bronze, Silver, and Gold times. Additionally, there will be reverse versions of all four Skyrocket and D.R.I.V.E. Breakneck races, though they won't feature Advanced or Challenge courses like some Skyriding races.

The initial feedback on the Skyrocket races has been mixed. While some players are eager to experience this new form of racing, others have criticized the jetpack flying for feeling stiff and less responsive compared to Skyriding. Fortunately, with Patch 11.1 still in development, there remains ample time for Blizzard to refine these races before their anticipated release in February.
