Phỏm Ta La - Tien Len Online is a beloved and familiar card game among Vietnamese people.
Phỏm, also known as Tá Lả or Tú Lơ Khơ, is a classic Vietnamese card game, particularly popular in the northern regions. "Tá Lả" is the southern name, while "Phỏm" is used in the north. The objective is to collect and discard cards strategically to form sets called "phỏm" while minimizing the point value of any unmelded cards. Played with a standard 52-card deck and featuring diverse gameplay, it's a captivating pastime. This game is a staple at family gatherings and holidays, providing entertainment for friends and relatives.
Key Terms in Phỏm / Tá Lả
- Phỏm: A set of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or three or four cards of the same rank.
- Rác (Junk cards): Unmatched cards that do not belong to any phỏm.
- Ù: When a player forms three phỏms (leaving no junk cards), they win immediately.
- Nọc (The Stomach): The remaining undealt cards placed face-down in the center.
- Móm (Bust): Finishing a round without having formed any phỏm.
- Ăn Chốt (Taking the Last Card): On the final turn, playing a junk card that another player can pick up.
- Gửi (Sending): On the final turn, if your junk card can be added to another player's exposed phỏm, you may "send" it there, and it won't count against your score.
- Đền (Compensation): If a player "takes the last card" and a subsequent player immediately goes Ù, the player who took the card must compensate the winner. The next player in line then compensates the first.
+ Additionally, compensation applies if a player picks up three consecutive cards from the discard pile.
- Tái: After your turn, if a player picks up a card you discarded, your turn comes again, allowing you to play one more card.
How to Play Phỏm - Tá Lả
- A game requires 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt 9 cards, except the dealer (or previous winner) who gets 10. The remaining cards form the "Nọc" pile, placed face-down in the middle.
- Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Gameplay:
+ The first player discards any card. The next player may pick it up if it helps form a phỏm; otherwise, they draw one card from the Nọc pile.
+ After picking up or drawing, the player discards one card, and the turn passes to the next player.
=> This cycle continues.
- The round ends when a player goes Ù. If no one does, it ends after four cycles, and players tally points from their junk cards to determine the winner.
- Final Turn: The player must expose all their phỏms, send any sendable cards to others' phỏms, then play a final discard. Remaining junk cards are scored.
Scoring Junk Cards (When No One Goes Ù):
+ The player with the lowest total score wins.
+ Aces count as 1 point, Jacks as 11, Queens as 12, Kings as 13. Number cards are worth their face value.
+ Tie-breaker: The player who exposed their cards first wins.
- Final Point Calculation:
+ 1st Place: +6 points
+ 2nd Place: -1 point
+ 3rd Place: -2 points
+ 4th Place: -3 points
+ Player Who Took the Last Card: -4 points
+ Player Whose Last Card Was Taken: +4 points
+ Player Going Ù (or Ù Khan): +15 points (each opponent loses 5 points)
+ Player Who is "Móm" (Bust): Loses 4 points to the winner.
