Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB)
Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent an engaging variation of the classic Bridge card game. As the third evolutionary stage in the bridge family, these games developed from straight bridge (also known as bridge whist) and serve as the direct predecessor to modern contract bridge.
Key Differences from Contract Bridge
Auction Bridge & IB features distinctly different scoring mechanics compared to contract bridge:
- Trick scoring follows unique point values
- Bonus scoring calculations vary significantly
- Penalty scoring operates differently
- No vulnerability concept exists
Similarities with Contract Bridge
Despite scoring differences, these variants share core gameplay elements:
- Trump selection follows nearly identical rules
- Actual gameplay mechanics remain similar
- Standard bridge laws apply
Gameplay Mechanics
The dealer initiates trump selection and must declare intention to win at least the odd trick in their chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. Bidding hierarchy prioritizes point value rather than trick count when comparing bids at different levels.
Example: A bid of 3 Spades (27 points) outranks 4 Clubs (24 points)
Scoring System
Each trick beyond six scores:
- Notrumps: 10 points
- Spades: 9 points
- Hearts: 8 points
- Diamonds: 7 points
- Clubs: 6 points
Game requirement: 30 points
