Phil Spencer Revives Ninja Gaiden Franchise

Team Ninja producer Fumihiko Yasuda revealed that the studio has been eager to develop a new installment in the Ninja Gaiden series for some time, but struggled with finalizing a concept. The breakthrough came when Koei Tecmo president Hisashi Koinuma and PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba discussed the project, eventually involving Phil Spencer. Spencer, recognizing the potential, proposed a collaboration between the three companies to kickstart the development of the game.

Phil Spencer disclosed that discussions about a sequel had been ongoing since 2017, following his initial conversation with Team Ninja. After years of deliberations, the ideal partner was identified in PlatinumGames, renowned for their work on high-octane action titles such as Bayonetta and NieR: Automata.

Last week, the much-anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4 was officially announced. Alongside this exciting news, a re-release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, an enhanced version of the Xbox 360 classic, was unexpectedly launched on Xbox, PS5, and PC.

The debut trailer showcased Ryu Hayabusa, the iconic ninja protagonist, at the helm of this thrilling action game. The gameplay trailer highlighted several innovative mechanics unique to Ninja Gaiden 4, including swift movement through environments using wires and rails.

While DOOM: The Dark Ages stole the spotlight at Developer_Direct, Ninja Gaiden 4, the eagerly awaited continuation of Koei Tecmo's beloved series, was also unveiled. Fans can look forward to its release in the fall of 2025.
