Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still at the helm—and we have a small but encouraging update straight from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper.
"I am [excited] too," the screenwriter told Screen Rant about the upcoming project. "I hope it arrives sooner than you expect."
The movie remains largely a mystery at this point. One of the few confirmed details is its setting after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously clarified the film's timeline placement. "That's also in the future," she said of Levy's film in a February interview with Deadline. "It's all set after the first nine films. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story taking place after Episode IX, perhaps five or six years later." This would position it as the first film to explore the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed the movie would follow 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm currently producing The Mandalorian movie, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's film, which comes after that," she explained. Another key detail is the reported casting of Ryan Gosling in a leading role.
Tropper's comments might signal that development is finally gaining momentum. Given that the film won't arrive until at least late 2026, and possibly 2027, patience will be essential.
Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the critically panned Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, having canceled several projects in the interim, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. In November, a different Star Wars movie with a late 2026 release slot was removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film set in Dave Filoni's Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi origin story from James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley's return as Rey after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a priority for Disney's future plans, with a recent THR report indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Believe it or not, that's not the entirety of Disney's Star Wars slate. Last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is writing a new trilogy that, contrary to early rumors, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars release will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a special three-episode launch.
