Sydney Sweeney Nears Deal for Lead Role in Live-Action Gundam Film

by Samuel Apr 27,2025

Sydney Sweeney, star of the recent film Madame Web, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to lead the cast of the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam. This exciting development follows the confirmation in February that production for the film had commenced, with Bandai Namco and Legendary Entertainment joining forces to co-finance the project.

The film, which has yet to receive an official title, will be helmed by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of Sweet Tooth, who will also pen the screenplay. While plot details and a release window remain under wraps, a tantalizing teaser poster has been unveiled to fans eager for any glimpse of what's to come.

According to Variety, Sydney Sweeney's involvement in the project is a significant step forward, though specifics about her role and the storyline are still undisclosed. Sweeney, renowned for her roles in HBO's Euphoria, The White Lotus, and films like Reality and Anyone but You, as well as her recent appearance in Madame Web, continues to expand her portfolio. Last month, she was also attached to star in and produce a film based on a horror story from a Reddit thread.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their intent to share more details as they become available, keeping fans eagerly awaiting further updates. The Mobile Suit Gundam series, which first aired in 1979, revolutionized the 'real robot anime' genre. It broke away from the traditional good versus evil narrative, presenting a more nuanced portrayal of war, enriched with detailed scientific explorations and complex human dramas, all centered around the concept of robots as 'mobile suits' or weapons. This approach sparked a massive cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with audiences today.
