Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Understanding Immersive Mode

by Lily May 15,2025

The *Assassin’s Creed* franchise has always been dedicated to transporting players into different historical settings, and with *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, Ubisoft takes a bold step into 16th Century Japan. A standout feature of this game is the Immersive Mode, designed to deepen your experience within this historical setting.

What Does Immersive Mode Do in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

In previous *Assassin’s Creed* titles, characters mostly speak in modernized dialogue, with occasional use of native languages. *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* follows suit, but introduces Immersive Mode to enhance authenticity. When activated, Immersive Mode ensures that characters speak in the languages they would have used during the time period—primarily Japanese, with Portuguese used by the Jesuits and Yasuke in interactions with them.

This feature significantly enhances the game's immersion, making the historical setting feel more accurate and real. While players could previously achieve a similar effect by choosing language options like Arabic in *Mirage*, Immersive Mode marks a significant advancement for the series.

Should You Turn On Immersive Mode in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

The primary drawback of using Immersive Mode is missing out on the performances by the English voice cast. However, the Japanese and Portuguese voice actors deliver equally compelling performances. *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* also offers comprehensive subtitle options, allowing you to read the dialogue in your preferred language.

Immersive Mode can be easily toggled on or off in the audio settings menu, and only requires a reload to the last save for changes to take effect. Unlike the game's Canon Mode, this setting does not lock you into a choice for the entire playthrough, making it risk-free to experiment with. If you're looking to experience *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* in the most authentic way possible, Immersive Mode is the perfect option to truly immerse yourself in history. We hope to see this feature return in future titles.

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
