Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs Continues: Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom has confirmed its ongoing commitment to reviving classic intellectual properties (IPs), with the Okami and Onimusha franchises spearheading this initiative. This article delves into Capcom's strategy and explores potential candidates for future revivals.

A Renewed Focus on Legacy Titles

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

In a December 13th press release announcing new installments in the Onimusha and Okami series, Capcom explicitly stated its intention to continue developing high-quality content based on its back catalog of IPs. The new Onimusha game, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A new Okami sequel is also in the works, with development helmed by the original game's team, though a release date remains undisclosed.

Capcom's strategic approach, as stated in their press release, centers on "re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently," aiming to maximize the value of its extensive library. This strategy is already underway, with Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 both scheduled for release in 2025. This doesn't preclude new IP development; recent releases such as Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal demonstrate Capcom's continued commitment to innovation.

Fan Input and Future Projects

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections," a fan vote on desired sequels and remakes, offers valuable insight into potential future projects. The results highlighted strong demand for titles such as Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire. Given the extended dormancy of these franchises (with Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers' last installments released in 1997 and 2003 respectively, and Breath of Fire 6 shutting down in 2017), a remaster or sequel for each is highly anticipated.

While Capcom remains discreet about its future plans, the "Super Elections" provide a strong indication of which dormant IPs might be next in line for a revival. The prominent votes for Onimusha and Okami further support the company's current focus.
