Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has announced the crucial Update 1.1.1, coming at a time when the recently launched strategy game is seeing fewer players on Steam compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and even the 15-year-old Civilization 5. On Valve's platform, Civilization 7 has recorded a 24-hour peak player count of 16,921, which falls short of entering Steam's top 100 most-played games. In comparison, Civilization 5, released back in 2010, achieved a 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, launched in 2016, boasts a significantly higher peak of 40,676 players. It's evident that many Civilization fans are continuing to play Civilization 6 over the newer installment.
In a Steam post, Firaxis detailed some of the "additions and refinements" included in Update 1.1.1. These updates encompass Quick Move Functionality, the new Natural Wonder Mount Everest, additional UI updates and polish, the ability to rename settlements and commanders, and more. Lead designer Ed Beach provided a thorough overview of these changes in a video, with full patch notes expected soon.
Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes
----------------------------------------Quick Move is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu, allowing units to reach their destination instantly for a faster gameplay experience.
A significant update includes a new start position option for map generation. The default setting for single-player games is now Standard, which provides a more varied and less predictable continental layout similar to Civilization 6. Multiplayer games will continue to use the Balanced setting to ensure fairness with more consistent maps.
Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their civilizations. Additionally, restarting the game is made easier with a single button click, which regenerates the map using new seeds while maintaining the same leader and civilization choices, akin to Civilization 6's features.
UI improvements include a city and town panel that remains open during purchases, new notifications for city attacks, indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also introduces significant pacing changes to enhance the gameplay experience.
Alongside these updates, a new civilization, Bulgaria, is being introduced today, March 25, along with Nepal and the new leader Simón Bolívar, as part of the paid Crossroads of the World Collection.

Civilization 7 has sparked controversy among series veterans due to its new mechanics and has struggled to attract players on Steam, unlike its console counterparts, where player numbers remain undisclosed. On Steam, Civilization 7 currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating and received a 7/10 score from IGN's review.
In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the mixed reviews from both press and players but remained optimistic, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" will eventually embrace the game as they spend more time playing. He described Civilization 7's initial performance as "very encouraging." Additionally, there are hints that the iconic leader Gandhi might make a return.
