The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which triumphed with 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for a highly anticipated second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the character of pilot John Blackthorn, will reprise his role and also step into the role of co-executive producer for Season 2.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role, signed on for the second season last May after the series was renewed, despite initially being conceived as a limited series. Sanada has also been promoted to executive producer following his involvement in the production of the first season. Production for Season 2 is slated to commence in January 2026, with filming returning to Vancouver, the original shooting location.
FX has described the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was adapted from James Clavell’s novel. The network provided further details on the narrative connection between the two seasons:
“In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined."
Fans eagerly await the release of new episodes, with hopes set on seeing them by the end of 2026. Until then, anticipation builds as we look forward to the continuation of this exceptional series.
