Ubisoft Hopes to Bounce Back with Star Wars Outlaws and AC Shadows
Company Share Price Dipped Consecutively Last Week
Ubisoft pinned its hopes on Star Wars Outlaws as a major release designed to strengthen its financial standing. Although critics praised the game, sales figures were disappointing, leading to a decline in Ubisoft's share price on September 3.
The company viewed both Star Wars Outlaws and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) as key long-term "value drivers." In its first-quarter 2024-25 report, Ubisoft emphasized these titles as central to improving its financial trajectory.
During this period, Ubisoft stated it was focused on launching promising new releases like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, aiming to position them as enduring value generators while continuing organizational transformation. The company also reported a 15% increase in session days across consoles and PC, largely fueled by Games-as-a-Service models. Additionally, Monthly Active Users (MAUs) rose by 7% year-over-year to reach 38 million.
Sales for Star Wars Outlaws have been characterized as "sluggish." Reuters reported that J.P. Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven noted the game has "struggled to meet our sales expectations despite positive critical reviews." Consequently, Kerven lowered his sales forecast from 7.5 million units to 5.5 million units through March 2025.
After launching on August 30, Ubisoft’s shares declined for two consecutive days. On Monday, September 3, the stock dropped by 5.1%, followed by an additional 2.4% decline by Tuesday morning. This downturn marked the company's lowest share price levels since 2015 and contributed to a cumulative drop of over 30% year-to-date.
Despite generally positive reviews from critics, Star Wars Outlaws has struggled to connect with players. At press time, it holds a user score of just 4.5 out of 10 on Metacritic. Meanwhile, Game8 awarded the game a 90/100 rating, calling it "an exceptional game that does justice to the Star Wars franchise."
