The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a much-anticipated feature that fans have been clamoring for over the past 11 years: subclasses. This exciting addition promises to revolutionize gameplay and enhance player experience. Dive in to discover how subclasses work and what's on the horizon for ESO.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines
As ESO celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled a host of new updates during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. The introduction of subclasses was a highlight, answering long-standing player requests for more flexibility in character development. No longer will players need to start anew every time a new skill tree is added; instead, they can now mix and match skill lines without rerolling their characters.
To unlock this feature, players must reach level 50. Upon reaching this milestone, they can retain one skill line from their original class and swap out two others for any of the six additional classes. This flexibility results in over 3000 possible combinations, allowing players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new system, stating that the team has thoroughly tested it. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, Lambert assures that the developers are content with the current balance.
Seasons of the Worm Cult
Zenimax Online is shifting towards a seasonal content model, as announced by Studio Director Matt Firor. This new approach aims to foster innovation and address player feedback more dynamically. "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems," Firor explained. This seasonal cadence will allow the developers to explore a broader range of content and increase variety.
The upcoming chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," serves as a sequel to the original Molag Bal storyline, taking place 10 years in the making. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone, investigating the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season will last most of the year, future seasons will typically span 3 to 6 months. Zenimax plans to revisit past storylines with "remix" seasons, teasing a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
