The tech-focused CES 2025 brought some exciting news for movie and TV show enthusiasts, with Sony announcing several adaptations of popular video games. Among the announcements was the confirmation of an official Helldivers 2 film, a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures. During the CES event, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, shared the news, stating: "Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2."
Developed by Arrowhead, Helldivers 2 draws inspiration from the cult classic sci-fi satire Starship Troopers. The game follows the futuristic soldiers fighting to protect a fascist regime known as Super Earth from alien robots called Automatons and bugs called Terminids, all while promoting "Managed Democracy."
While fans are eager for more details, Sony and Arrowhead have yet to provide further information. However, Arrowhead's Chief Creative Officer, Johan Pilestedt, addressed a question on X/Twitter about the developer's involvement in the film's production to ensure fidelity to the game. Pilestedt admitted to dodging the question but confirmed that Arrowhead would have some input. He emphasized that the team should not have final creative control, stating, "I've been dodging this question. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say."
The choice of Helldivers 2 for a movie adaptation might seem surprising, especially with Starship Troopers already existing as a film. It will be intriguing to see how Sony approaches this adaptation and which talents they bring on board. Given the early stage of the project, fans might have to wait a while for more details.
Helldivers 2 has proven to be a phenomenal success, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. The game is currently experiencing a resurgence following the release of the long-awaited Illuminate update, which introduces a third faction for players to battle.
In addition to Helldivers 2, Sony's CES 2025 press conference revealed other exciting adaptations. These include a movie adaptation of Guerrilla's Horizon Zero Dawn and an anime adaptation of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima. Sony's commitment to adapting its video game IPs is evident, with the much-anticipated Season 2 of the hit HBO show The Last of Us set to premiere in April.
