Sony's Killzone series has been quiet for many years. In a recent interview, franchise composer Joris de Man added his voice to those hoping for a revival.
Speaking with VideoGamer about the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man shared his wish to see the earlier Killzone games make a comeback.
"I'm aware there have been fan petitions for it," de Man stated. "It's a complex situation though — I can't speak on behalf of Guerrilla, of course... Whether it will ever happen is uncertain. I sincerely hope it does, because it's an iconic series. However, any return would need to consider current sensibilities and shifts in player preferences, as the games can be quite bleak in tone."
The form a potential Killzone return could take remains open. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might find more immediate success than an entirely new installment.
"A remastered collection could do very well; I'm less sure about a brand-new game," de Man commented. "It's possible audiences have moved on and desire something different. Sometimes I sense a preference for more casual, quicker-paced experiences."
The Killzone games are known for their slower, more deliberate pace and heavier feel compared to franchises like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, was noted for its perceived input lag on PlayStation 3, which affected its responsiveness. Visually and thematically, the series is defined by its dark, gritty, and often somber atmosphere.
A recent Washington Post interview indicated that Sony-owned developer Guerrilla has largely shifted focus from Killzone to its Horizon franchise.
Nevertheless, it has been over a decade since Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the prospect of a revival for Killzone — or another classic PlayStation shooter — continues to excite a dedicated fanbase. Whether it happens or not, those fans can count at least one more supporter in their corner.
