Three Kingdom Heroes brings top-level AI challenges to chess-like duels, coming soon

by Victoria Jan 22,2025

Koei Tecmo unveils a new Three Kingdoms title: Three Kingdoms Heroes! This chess and shogi-inspired mobile battler lets you command iconic figures from the Three Kingdoms era, utilizing their unique abilities and strategic maneuvers. But the real star? The revolutionary GARYU AI.

The Three Kingdoms period, a blend of historical fact and legendary tales, has captivated storytellers and game developers for ages. Koei Tecmo, a master of the genre, continues its exploration with Three Kingdoms Heroes, offering a fresh approach for both longtime fans and newcomers. The familiar art style and epic narrative remain, but this turn-based board game introduces a thrilling new dimension.

The game’s diverse roster of heroes, each with distinct skills and strategies, promises countless gameplay possibilities. However, the most compelling aspect is the GARYU AI, developed by HEROZ – the creators of the world-champion shogi AI, dlshogi. This AI, launching January 25th, promises an unprecedented level of adaptive and challenging gameplay.

A truly formidable opponent

While AI claims are often met with skepticism (remember Deep Blue?), GARYU’s pedigree is impressive. Its predecessor, dlshogi, dominated the World Shogi Championships for two years, consistently outmaneuvering top grandmasters. The prospect of facing such a sophisticated AI in a game steeped in strategic warfare is undeniably enticing. This innovative AI system is, arguably, the game's most significant draw.
