The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has secured its screenwriters in the talented duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for their work on the successful film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The announcement came today, revealing that Daley and Goldstein will pen the screenplay for this much-anticipated adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game.
Adding to the excitement, the film will be produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap. This collaboration promises a fresh and dynamic take on the classic game.
In addition to their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein have recently written and directed the original film Mayday. Their impressive resume also includes writing credits for The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and skill in crafting compelling narratives.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script, but that project ultimately fizzled out. Subsequent attempts in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro teaming up with writer Andrew Niccol, and later, in 2019, it was reported that actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these efforts materialized.
The current push for a Monopoly movie was reignited by Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the script, and Margot Robbie's production prowess, there's hope that this version will successfully "pass Go" and deliver an engaging cinematic experience.
