Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel. In a recent poll on X (formerly Twitter), Notch revealed he's developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with first-person dungeon crawler mechanics (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.
The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired project, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. This significant response isn't surprising, considering Minecraft's enduring popularity with millions of daily players worldwide.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He acknowledged the potential demand for a new Minecraft-like game and expressed enthusiasm for returning to his passion project. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, the fan response strongly suggests a Minecraft successor is the preferred path.
It's crucial to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios (the developer) to Microsoft in 2014. This means he can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assured fans that any spiritual successor would avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's current work, expressing respect for their ongoing efforts.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the project that fans clearly desire.
While awaiting Notch's potential "sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
