Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

**Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.**

The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie gave IGN a behind-the-scenes look at one of the film's most entertaining moments, which was inspired by a classic scene from The NeverEnding Story. In the movie, Jack Black’s character, Steve, finds himself in a hilarious predicament when he has to hitch a ride on Jason Momoa’s Garrett, who only has enough Elytra wings for himself and Sebastian Hansen’s Henry. The resulting scene is a masterclass in physical comedy as Steve scrambles to stay airborne, clinging to Garrett to avoid plummeting to his doom. But this wasn’t just a random gag—it carried deeper inspiration.

Play“We really wanted a *Falkor moment* from *The NeverEnding Story*—something that felt both majestic and breathtaking,” explained *A Minecraft Movie* director Jared Hess. “But naturally, things had to take a turn for the worse.”

Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson chimed in, adding, “Between takes, it was pure chaos. Jack is perched on top of Jason, tangled in all sorts of rigging... and then he starts singing. He does that a lot between scenes, but this time, he belts out the lyrics to The NeverEnding Story, pretending he’s riding Falkor. It was hilarious!”

Interestingly, Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3, giving the reference even more depth. For Momoa, being part of such a playful moment was a highlight.

“I got to help write that scene, and Jack was totally on board,” Momoa recalled with a laugh. “After Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to bring some of that energy into the mix. We envisioned Jack and I pulling stunts, then switching things up mid-air. Watching us act it out on set was gold.”

Jack Black joked, “I’m not sure if it made the final cut—it went through several iterations. Some versions were borderline R-rated, but ultimately, we kept it family-friendly!”
