Netflix has officially announced the end of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the close of a brief yet intriguing experiment in narrative gaming. Despite boasting a solid player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories may come as a surprise to many. So, what led to this closure? Let's dive in for all the details!
The decision was first reported by Variety and reflects a larger strategic shift within Netflix Games. The company is now steering its focus towards developing mobile titles that include party games, kids' games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences suitable for TV play.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects, including the eagerly awaited Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled, But Is It Shutting Down?
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories consistently ranked among the most-played titles on the Netflix Games platform. According to recent data, it holds the fourth position in Netflix Games' top 10 carousel, which is based on playtime rather than downloads.
Looking ahead, the final interactive title in the Netflix Stories lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Once this game is fully rolled out, no new titles will be added to the series. This announcement comes just after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, slated for an April 8th release. Unlike previous games, The Love Contract was an original romance story, not based on any existing Netflix IP. It revolved around an actress navigating a complex love triangle with a Hollywood star and a billionaire, amidst fame, scandal, and fake dating. Unfortunately, this game has now been scrapped.
While new developments have ceased, existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Fans can continue to enjoy titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels like Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been cancelled.
That wraps up the full story on the cancellation of Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and haven't tried these games yet, you can still check them out on the Google Play Store.
