Recent Nintendo filings have ignited excitement among fans, hinting at the possibility of a new GameCube controller for playing classic GameCube titles on the Nintendo Switch 2 via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller," seemingly compatible with the Switch 2, suggests a wireless Bluetooth controller.
Further investigation by Famiboards revealed that an image within the filing shows a label location matching the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

Although this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation points towards its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online service, which already utilizes wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This fuels anticipation for a potential GameCube game library on Nintendo Switch Online. While fans have long requested GameCube classics on the Switch, Nintendo has primarily focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games. Could the Switch 2 finally bring GameCube games back in a significant way?

The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer confirming backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. Many details, including its game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed, although theories surrounding a Joy-Con mouse have gained traction.
A recent Nintendo patent suggested the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch's rail system, the new controllers appear to use magnets for attachment on either side.
This design change, while not significantly altering the hardware, allows players to customize button placement and port locations. This flexibility could potentially unlock interesting gameplay mechanics.
