Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's highly anticipated launch next month. The latest video from Nintendo's official Nintendo Today app showcases the new official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to securely store up to six game cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.
As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to those of the original Switch, allowing the new console to utilize a single cartridge slot for games from both generations. However, there is a notable distinction: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that seems to be consistent across all Switch 2 games, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge highlighted in the video. If you don't have the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video via OatmealDome on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge features a printed design sticker with the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case also has room for the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached, as well as two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Apart from the color change, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors, including the bitter coating applied by Nintendo to deter users from placing them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta explained to GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
