Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo eShop Launch Amidst Legal Battle
Pocketpair, the developer behind the controversial Palworld, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action-card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch release and comes as a surprise, given the ongoing legal dispute with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.
The September 2024 lawsuit alleges patent infringement concerning Palworld's Pal Spheres, deemed similar to Pokémon's Poké Balls. Despite the controversy and Pocketpair's previous statement describing the situation as "unfortunate," the company celebrated OverDungeon's launch with a 50% discount until January 24th. This move, following a substantial Palworld update and increased player count, has fueled speculation online regarding its strategic implications.
The Nintendo eShop release of OverDungeon, initially available only on Steam, is particularly noteworthy considering Palworld's presence on PS5 and Xbox platforms. This strategic choice has prompted discussion among gamers, with some suggesting it as a potential response to the ongoing legal proceedings.
A History of Comparisons to Nintendo Titles
OverDungeon isn't the first Pocketpair game to draw comparisons to Nintendo properties. Craftopia, released in 2020, shared visual similarities with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite this, Craftopia continues to receive updates. Meanwhile, Palworld, despite the lawsuit, continues to be actively supported with ongoing updates, including a recent collaboration with Terraria, adding a new Pal and promising further content in 2025.
The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains largely undisclosed, with patent experts suggesting a protracted legal process unless a settlement is reached. Beyond the Terraria crossover, Pocketpair has hinted at future Palworld developments, including Mac and potential mobile ports in 2025.
